NHS Next Generation chief executive programme

Local Government Leadership collaborates with the University of Leeds’ Centre for Innovation in Health Management on this development programme for aspiring chief executives in the London, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authorities.

While every programme is tailored to the place in question, they share some common strands. The programmes all combine classic and current theory with real-world experience and context-setting pieces. They aim to connect with innovative practice globally and locally to help leaders better understand their own work and leadership style.

Personal development also forms part of the programmes, with both coaching and community of practice elements playing key roles. Participants learn to increase their personal leadership capacity and awareness so that they can lead their organisations more effectively.

The programmes also help participants to understand the context in which they are now required to lead. This includes learning about leading in a political environment, working with stakeholders to create a shared ambition for health, and leading in times of ambiguity and complexity. This is held within the 'systems thinking' framework.

During the programme participants will bring the different streams together to focus on a piece of real work of their choice. This weaves the programme tightly together with ‘the day job’ and helps to create sustainable change in their relationships and way of working.
